Women and Biography
Blanche Wiesen Cook, historian and biographer of Eleanor Roosevelt, speaks about her subject’s life and legacy. At the time of this recording, two volumes of Cook’s three-volume biography of Roosevelt had been published. This lecture is part of the 2000 Ruth and Oliver Stanton About Women series. Cook speaks about her research and comments on Eleanor Roosevelt’s personality, activism, politics, and sometimes troubled marriage to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She argues that Roosevelt’s greatest legacy was perhaps “her often repeated observation that government exists for one purpose, which is to make life better for all people.” The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
