Modern Jewish History: The Search for Jewish Identity
Non-Zionist Nationalism: Solomon Dubnow
Author, lecturer, and philosopher Dr. Eugene Borowitz discusses examples of Jewish nationalism outside of Zionism. This lecture is part of a series exploring the modern Jewish identity. Borowitz centers his discussion around the idea of Jewish Autonomism, a philosophy advanced primarily by Jewish historian Simon Dubnow. Jewish Autonomism proposes that the Jewish nationality does not need to exist as a literal, physical nation, but can refer to the Jewish culture and community within existing nations throughout the diaspora. Borowitz also discusses Jewish Territorialism, which suggests that a Jewish nation does not need to exist in Israel specifically to be Jewish. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
