The Humanities and Education Today
The Arts and the Humanities in a Time of Cultural Upheaval
Lynne V. Cheney, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, speaks with Hilton Kramer, editor of The New Criterion magazine, about the state of the humanities in America. Cheney shares statistics about the prevalence of the humanities in the United States. She points to positive signs such as the public’s increasing interest in attending museums, libraries, and cultural centers, as well as downward trends in the number of students majoring in the humanities at colleges and universities. She explains that this decrease may be due to effects of overspecialization and the increasingly political nature of research and scholarship on many campuses. Kramer discusses the different issues affecting the humanities, particularly the social sciences. The discussion concludes with audience questions.
