Biography of a Jewish Life
Rashi’s Daughters
Author Maggie Anton speaks about her historical fiction series, Rashi’s Daughters. At the time of this recording, two of the three books in the series were published: Book One: Joheved (2005) and Book Two: Miriam (2007). The final installment, Book Three: Rachel, was published in 2009. Anton explains that while studying the life and work of the medieval French rabbi and commentator, Rashi, she learned that he had three educated daughters. Anton became fascinated with the lives of these three women, who lived and wrote at a time when it was unusual for women to study. Anton channeled this curiosity into fictionalized accounts of each daughter’s life, incorporating what little details are known from historical records and some of Rashi’s work and commentary. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
