Artists' Visions
Lorna Simpson
Robert Storr, Senior Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, speaks with American photographer and filmmaker, Lorna Simpson. This lecture is part of the 1999 Artists’ Visions series. Simpson shares slides and speaks about her work from the early 1990s to present. She comments on specific pieces including Wigs (1994), a series of felt photographs depicting hair without bodies, and Nine Props (1995) a series of “portraits” of surrogate objects referencing the photography of James VanDerZee. Simpson also discusses her film education and her initial reluctance to start any film projects because of the inherent cost. After an artist’s residency in Ohio, however, she returned to filmmaking. Before speaking with Storr, she screens some excerpts from her work. The discussion is followed with questions from the audience.
