Behind the scenes at the Harkness Dance Festival

Feb 13, 2020

Who knew that a string bass could tap dance—or that a pair of shoes could be part of a jazz band? It happened before our eyes, when Bessie Award-winning tap dancer Kazu Kumagai and jazz bassist Alex Blake invited a small group of 92Y donors to be part of their open rehearsal on February 13 this year in 92Y’s Buttenwieser Hall. Kazu is a 2019/20 Harkness Artist in Residence — participating in the program that provides extraordinary dancers from all over the world the opportunity and space to develop and share their work. They were preparing for their Harkness Dance Festival performance, Good Rhythm Wonderful Life.

The bass danced and flirted, and the shoes sang. We’re so happy to share some of that performance again, here.
