Critics on Criticism

The Critic as Journalist

Nov 18, 1975

Clive Barnes, a dance and theater critic for The New York Times, answers audience questions about his work and career. Throughout the forum he speaks about how he became a dance critic, the economic status of the arts, the emergence of elitism in the arts, the state of the London theater vs. the New York theater, and more. Barnes reflects on the importance of popular culture and contends that “a critics power is not something given to him by the government, but by his readers.” NOTE: The recording includes only the question and answer portion of the event. Audience questions are difficult to hear.

The Preservation of and Increased Access to the 92nd Street Y Humanities Audio Archives is generously funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.
