Fred Sainz: How The Supreme Court's Gay Marriage Ruling Impacts LGBT Youth

Aug 28, 2013

VP of Communications and Marketing for Human Rights Campaign Fred Sainz recently spoke with us at The Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C. about how the Supreme Court's historic ruling on gay marriage impacts LGBT youth across America.

Like many fighting for marriage equality, Sainz saw the ruling as a major milestone in the fight for equal rights:

"Every day, LGBT youth are sent a message that they are less than, that they are not equal to their straight counterparts. So, for the first time, this Supreme Court has sent a very affirming message to LGBT youth that they are part of American society, that they are as constructive a part of our society than anyone else."

Sainz added,

"Imagine the power that that has to a gay or transgender youth sitting in say Mississippi. For the very first time, they may very well have received the message from the highest levels of the United States government that they are in fact no different than their straight counterparts."

This interview was filmed at The Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C.
