Artists' Visions
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen
Nan Rosenthal, senior consultant at The Metropolitan Museum of Art at the time of this recording, moderates a presentation and discussion with sculptor Claes Oldenburg. Oldenberg gives a presentation entitled “Spirit of the Moment,” during which he discusses his artistic inspiration and design process and shares images of his large-scale public sculptures from around the world. Projects discussed include Proposed Monument for the Intersection of Canal Street and Broadway, N.Y.C. (1965), Crusoe Umbrella (1979), and The Flashlight (1981). Rosenthal and Oldenburg go on to discuss his work including his manufacturing process, how he factors in the element of scale, and his wife, Coosje van Bruggen, with whom many of his works were developed in partnership. The discussion is followed by questions from the audience.
