Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America

Feb 22, 2006

Radio personality, lecturer, journalist, and author Fergus M. Bordewich speaks about his book, Bound for Canaan: The Epic Story of the Underground Railroad, America's First Civil Rights Movement (2005). Bordewich describes the Underground Railroad as the “first American mass movement that asserted the principle of personal, active responsibility for other’s human rights” and the country’s “first great movement of mass civil disobedience.” He reads excerpts from his book and explains what the Underground Railroad looked like both at the national level and locally in New York City. He comments on the roles of significant figures like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, and David Ruggles and reflects on the general impact of the movement in cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Detroit. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
