Ring with a Stone-A Refresher Course

Basic techniques will be reviewed, focused on soldering, forming, and setting to create a step-by-step plan to create your ring.

Each student will make a ring with at least one stone. Additional techniques will be covered as needed. This class is for the intermediate student to get a refresher on the overall process of design and fabrication from start to finish. Students must have intermediate level soldering skills.

David teaches undergraduate jewelry design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and 92nd Street Y. He has taught different workshops at other institutions, including Penland School in 2008 and Arrowmont in 2009. Besides teaching and making jewelry and sculpture, Butler has also worked with other designers, collaborating to bring ideas to fruition, including Donna Karan, 2006, 2007 and Leila Tai, 2009, 2010. He is also involved with museum exhibition design and installation, including the well received, reviewed and recently closed Lost World of Old Europe, an exhibit of ceramic and metal objects from the Danube Valley from 7,000 years ago held at the NYU Institute for the Study of the Ancient World: www.nyu.edu/isaw. David has worked with the Folk Art Museum on several occasions, including work on the Approaching Abstraction exhibit. Other museums he has worked with include the Guggenheim, The New York Historical Society and The Bard Center for Graduate Studies.
