Program Details
Elementary school classrooms in 92NY’s Young Leaders Series explore music and dance traditions that grew out of jazz in NYC and continue to flourish today.
Through lively classroom sessions with their dedicated Teaching Artists and attendance at exhilarating performances at 92NY, students will learn about the origins, traditions and contemporary practice of swing music and dance, tap dance, and the American Songbook.
The 92NY performances will feature NYC-based rising stars of the music and dance worlds: the swing dance ensemble Jazz As Movement with the Eyal Vilner Swing Band; dance company Music from the Sole, which celebrates tap’s Afro-diasporic roots; and Jazz vocalist Samara Joy.
NOTE: Classes can choose a residency that emphasizes the study of music more than dance — and vice versa. Classes that choose to focus more on music will be paired with a 92NY Music Teaching Artist. Classes that choose to focus on dance will be paired with a 92NY Dance Teaching Artist.
