Intro to Zine-Making: Me, My People, & My City

    Fri, March 15, 4:30-6:30 pm

Zines, pronounced as ZEENS, are small booklets that can be created using a single sheet of paper. They are simple to make and reproduce and often combine words and images to narrate a story, making them a powerful tool for communication.

Over the past century, zines have been used by marginalized groups to publish stories and perspectives that were not covered in mainstream media, uniting people and serving as a strong community-building tool. The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is offering a workshop called “Intro to Zine-Making: Me, My People, & My City.” In this workshop, we’ll create zines that tell stories about connections to people around you and NYC. Teaching Artist will guide participants through a community-building activity, which will help them connect with other artists who respond to a series of prompts to reflect on their connection to people and place (How have my people and my city influenced who I am? How have I influenced my people and my city?).

The workshop is an excellent fit for those interested in storytelling and image-making (illustration, photography, collage). CUP will provide all the necessary art supplies for the participants. At the end of the workshop, each participant will create and share a one-page zine.

    #ItStartsWithTheArts: Advocacy Training 101

Thu, March 14, 4:30-5:30 pm ET

Calling all arts and education student advocates!

Join the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable for a session designed to teach you the skills needed to advocate today in order to shape a bright, bold future for New York City’s tomorrow. This virtual workshop is designed to provide information, advice, and action steps to help you advocate for more equitable access to arts in NYC schools and communities.

The NYC Arts in Education is the main convening body for NYC’s arts in education community. Over the past three years, we’ve organized thousands of New Yorkers through our grassroots It Starts with the Arts campaign to advocate for universal access to arts education in all NYC schools. As our city faces tough budget cuts, we believe it’s imperative that officials hear from New Yorkers like YOU!

Your Social Pharmacy at Open Source Gallery

    Wed, March 13, 3:30-5:30 pm

You are invited to an interactive “Social Pharmacy” in our unconventional art gallery! Within this Pharmacy, which is part of an exhibition by Jody Wood called Collecting Health, we invite you to exchange simple healing recipes. The room will be full of lots of little jars, stories, and sculptures that other visitors have left for you to take. Maybe you will find the perfect “medicine” for you or your family and friends! There will be lots of materials, a way to cook, space for writing and sculpting, and a place to mix and match herbs that are often used for common remedies and medicine. We will workshop ideas that might help form and maintain friendships or soften the effects of a breakup. We will talk about actions and medicines that help us, such as a cup of tea that helps you focus, breathing exercises that calm you down, or your mom’s remedy that helps the common flu. Maybe your family has some tried-and-true healing ideas that seem strange to others, because they are from a different cultural background. We would love to hear about it all and leave some of your “medicine” in our social pharmacy.
