Russia’s war in Ukraine has resulted in staggering human and financial costs — over 600,000 Russian casualties according to Pentagon estimates, and war-related expenditures exceeding $211 billion as of early 2024.

With economic losses projected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2026, and the Kremlin under intensifying scrutiny, the future of Vladimir Putin’s regime hangs in the balance. Will Putin retain his grip on power? Can the military sustain its support? What role can the West play, and what lies ahead for Ukraine and its NATO aspirations amid shifting US leadership?

Join two of Putin’s most prominent critics for a compelling and timely discussion. Vladimir Kara-Murza, twice poisoned by Kremlin operatives and recently released from imprisonment in a landmark East-West prisoner exchange, brings firsthand insights into Putin’s inner workings. A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Senior Fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, Kara-Murza is one of the most influential voices for Russian democratic reform.

Sir Bill Browder, the CEO of Hermitage Capital Management and leader of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign, has been a relentless advocate for human rights and anti-corruption measures, earning him the distinction of being named Putin’s “#1 enemy” by the Russian president himself.

Moderating the discussion is Richard Salomon, a Senior Fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre and co-founder of the Illinois Holocaust Museum, who brings a global human rights perspective to this critical conversation.

The evening concludes with a powerful recital by acclaimed pianist Mikhail Voskresensky, who fled Russia with his family in 2022 in protest of the war. Voskresensky’s artistry will underscore the enduring spirit of resistance and hope.

Vladimir Kara-Murza is a Russian politician, author, historian, and former political prisoner. A close colleague of the slain opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, he has served as deputy leader of the People’s Freedom Party and was a candidate for the Russian Parliament. Leading diplomatic efforts on behalf of the opposition, Kara-Murza played a key role in the adoption of Magnitsky sanctions against top Russian officials by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, and Australia. For this work he was twice poisoned and left in a coma; a joint media investigation by Bellingcat, The Insider, and Der Spiegel has identified FSB officers behind the attacks. In April 2022 Kara-Murza was arrested in Moscow for publicly denouncing the invasion of Ukraine and the war crimes committed by Russian forces. Following a closed-door trial at the Moscow City Court, he was sentenced to 25 years for “high treason” and kept in solitary confinement at a maximum-security prison in Siberia. He was released in August 2024 as part of the largest East-West prisoner exchange since the Cold War negotiated by the U.S. and German governments. Kara-Murza is a contributing writer at the Washington Post, winning the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for his columns written from prison, and has previously worked for Echo of Moscow, BBC, RTVi, Kommersant, World Affairs, and other media organisations. He has directed three documentary films and is the author or contributor to several books on Russian history and politics. Kara-Murza currently serves as vice-president at the Free Russia Foundation, as senior advisor at Human Rights First, and as senior fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. He was the founding chairman of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and has led successful international efforts to commemorate Nemtsov, including with street designations in Washington D.C. and London. Kara-Murza is a recipient of several awards, including the Council of Europe’s Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, and is an honorary fellow at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He holds an M.A. (Cantab.) in History from Cambridge. He is married, with three children.

Bill Browder is the bestselling author of Red Notice and Freezing Order, and head of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign.

Once the largest foreign portfolio investor in Russia, Bill Browder gained prominence for his vocal anti-corruption campaigning. In retaliation, in 2005, the Russian government declared him a threat to national security and expelled him from Russia. Bill Browder’s Russian lawyer — Sergei Magnitsky — testified about a $230 million government corruption scheme and named officials involved in it. Magnitsky was then arrested by implicated officials, tortured and killed in prison at the age of 37, leaving a wife and two children.

This tragedy prompted Bill Browder’s global campaign to seek justice, which has resulted in the adoption of Magnitsky Laws in 35 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, the EU and Australia. The Magnitsky Laws impose visa bans and asset freezes on human rights abusers and corrupt officials.

Starting from 2015, Bill Browder has been hosting the Oscars of Human Rights — the annual Global Magnitsky Awards gala — held on the anniversary of Sergei Magnitsky’s death. Senator Cardin, Senator McCain, Congressman Jim McGovern, Alexei Navalny, and Jimmy Lai have been among the Magnitsky Awards recipients.

In 2024, Bill Browder was honoured for his exceptional contribution to international affairs, anti-corruption and human rights by King Charles who appointed him to Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George.

A legendary pianist and prize winner of many international piano competitions, including the first Van Cliburn Competition, Mikhail Voskresensky has captivated audiences with his electrifying piano music interpretations for more than 60 years.

Born in Berdyansk, Ukraine, Voskresensky graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. His international career began with Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto in Warsaw with the Bolshoi Theatre orchestra. In 1957, he played the European premiere of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto in the presence of the composer at the Prague Spring Festival.

Voskresensky chaired the piano faculty at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and taught at Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo. His pupils have won more than 120 international prizes, including 61 gold medals. He has judged and presided over many international competitions, including the Tchaikovsky and Skryabin competitions.

in 2022, Voskresensky left Russia with his family for the United States protesting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and now he lives in New York.

Richard Salomon

Richard A. Salomon is a graduate of Carleton College and Harvard Law School. Since 1994, Mr. Salomon has been the founder and CEO of Vantage Point Consultants. Vantage Point Consultants advises corporations on ways to optimize the expenditure of legal dollars, running the gamut fromthe drafting of Guidelines for Outside Counsel on cost management principles and converging the number of law firms utilized for common geographic and substantive markets to forging alternative fee arrangements with outside counsel and establishing preferred vendor programs for recurring categories of law-related charges. Vantage Point has worked with over 400 of the Fortune 500, including their General Counsel, throughout the world.

Mr. Salomon is involved in numerous philanthropic and social service-related activities. He is a Senior Fellow of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre For Human Rights in Montreal; a member of the Advisory Board of the Renew Democracy Initiative, founded by chess icon and global activist Garry Kasparov; a co-founder, member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (2008 - present), the 2017 National Museum of the Year; and a member of the Advisory Board for the Visas for Life Foundation (relating to Consul General Chiune Sugihara) since 1996. Mr. Salomon previously served on the Board of New York University’s Of Many Institute and the President’s Council of the Interfaith Youth Core. He has also organized and moderated many events with the 92NY, Temple Emanu-El’s Streicker Center, the Illinois Holocaust Museum, the Alliance For Justice, The Common Good, and many other venerable institutions.
