Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Saoirse Ronan after a screening of her new film, The Outrun.

Even before reaching 30, Saoirse Ronan received 4 Oscar nominations, beginning with Atonement (2007) at the age of 13, and continuing with Brooklyn (2015), followed by Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Little Women. Her other notable credits include Hanna (2011), Mary Queen of Scots (2018), Ammonite (2020), and Steve McQueen’s historical drama, Blitz, the closing-night selection of the 2024 NY Film Festival.

The Outrun is directed by Nora Fingscheidt, based on the bestselling 2016 memoir by Amy Liptrot. Ronan produced the feature alongside Jack Lowden and Dominic Norris. She plays a young biologist for whom alcoholism and recovery are cyclical. Moving from London to the isolation of the Orkney islands, she begins to understand her place in the natural world. As Gerwig wrote about Ronan when the actress received a tribute from the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, “in The Outrun, she holds the vast discomfort and ecstasy of being alive. She fully inhabits this other life.”

Four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan broke into Hollywood at 13 years old with her performance as Briony Tallis in Atonement, which garnered her BAFTA and Oscar nominations. This Fall, Ronan will star in Steve McQueen’s historical drama, Blitz, for Apple; as well as in The Outrun, based on the bestselling memoir by Amy Liptrot and directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Ronan produced the feature alongside Jack Lowden and Dominic Norris.

Last year, Ronan starred alongside Paul Mescal in Foe, directed by Garth Davis (LION), and based on the novel by Ian Reid. In 2021, Ronan made her UK stage debut as Lady Macbeth in Macbeth at London’s Almeida Theatre to rave reviews and in 2020, she starred alongside Kate Winslet in Francis Lee’s critically-acclaimed independent historical drama Ammonite, for Neon.

In 2019, Ronan starred as Jo March in Sony and Greta Gerwig’s Oscar nominated film, Little Women, alongside Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Florence Pugh and Timothée Chalamet. Ronan’s performance garnered her BAFTA and Oscar nominations for Lead Actress.

The year prior, Ronan garnered Oscar, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice and Independent Spirit award nominations for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. The A24 film earned 197 nominations, including Oscar and Screen Actors Guild.

Ronan made her Broadway debut in 2016 with Ivo van Hove’s Tony-nominated revival of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

In 2015, Ronan starred in Fox Searchlight’s Brooklyn. She earned Oscar and BAFTA nominations in the Lead Actress category. The film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year.

Annette Insdorf is Professor of Film at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, and Moderator of 92NY’s Reel Pieces series. Her books include Francois Truffaut, a study of the French director’s work; two books about Polish filmmakers — Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski and Intimations: The Cinema of Wojciech Has; Philip Kaufman; and the landmark study, Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust (with a foreword by Elie Wiesel). Her latest book is Cinematic Overtures: How to Read Opening Scenes. Among the recent honors she has received are 92NY’s “Exceptional Women Award” (2020), the Silver Medallion from the 2021 Telluride Film Festival, and Moment Magazine’s Creativity Award (2021).
