Richard Gadd’s “chilling, visceral, deeply compelling” (The Guardian) limited series sent shock waves around the world when it launched on Netflix, landing at #1 on the network and boasting a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%.

Based on the award-winning hit Edinburgh Fringe one-man play — which in turn was based on Richard Gadd’s real-life experiences — Baby Reindeer follows struggling comedian Donny Dunn’s (Richard Gadd) warped relationship with his stalker Martha (Jessica Gunning) and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a deeply buried trauma. Join Gadd and co-stars Gunning and Mau for an episode screening followed by a conversation about the development of this thought-provoking, remarkable, unmissable series.

Episodes 101 and 102 will be screened before the conversation.

Richard Gadd

Scottish writer and actor, Richard Gadd, is currently starring in the critically acclaimed Netflix adaptation of his Olivier award-winning stage play, Baby Reindeer. This series is based on the true story of his relationship with his real-life stalker, “Martha”. The series explores Richard’s own complicity in his initial relationship with Martha as well as how the system’s failures to support her contributed to her campaign of harassment. The play made its debut at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019, followed by a sold out London debut at the Bush Theatre in 2019 with a transfer to the Ambassadors Theatre announced but subsequently postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Having received 60 million views in its first month on Netflix, Baby Reindeer is on its way to hitting Netflix’s most popular list. Critics referred to the show as an “early contender for show of the year” and EMPIRE has described Richard’s performance as “phenomenal, a consistently charming presence in every scene, and that’s true even in Donny’s most unlikeable moments.” Baby Reindeer sat at #1 on Netflix globally for coming up to a month after release.

It has recently been announced that Richard will be writing and creating BBC One’s original six part series, Lions. Set in Glasgow, the drama will follow two estrangers brothers across the decades, exploring the complexities of their relationship and diving into what it means to be a man. Lions is being produced by Mam Tor Productions.

Since 2014, Richard’s writing and performing has seen him garner critical acclaim and an established following. His comedy shows have included 2014’s Cheese and Crack Whores and Breaking Gadd, as well as 2015’s Edinburgh debut of Waiting for Gaddott. In 2016, Richard’s play Monkey See Monkey Do debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, transferring to sell-out run at Soho Theatre. The multi-award winning play, including an Edinburgh Comedy Award, follows Richard’s crazed inner monologue of his state of mind as he jogs on a treadmill, relaying the anxiety that has taken over his mind as a result of a sexual assault. The play was subsequently broadcast on Comedy Central.

Richard’s previous acting credits include BBC Two’s BAFTA nominated Against the Law, Clique, One Normal Night, Code 404 and Tripped. He is also known for his writing for Netflix’s Sex Education, Dave’s Ultimate Worrier and The Last Leg.

Jessica Gunning is currently starring as Martha in the critically acclaimed Netflix adaptation of Richard Gadd’s Olivier award-winning stage play, Baby Reindeer. This spring will also see Jessica reprise her role as Diane in Stephen Merchant’s and BBC One’s acclaimed crime thriller comedy The Outlaws. Set in Bristol, the series follows seven strangers from different walks of life who are forced together to complete a Community Payback sentence but, as they become involved in each other’s lives, they also become involved with a dangerous criminal gang. Jessica stars alongside Christopher Walken and Richard E Grant. The Outlaws will air on BBC One in the UK on 30th May and on 31st May on Amazon Prime in the US.

Jessica Gunning is recognisable for her roles spanning across film, theatre and television. She began her stage career at the National Theatre in Much Ado About Nothing and Major Barbara. In 2012, she was seen in White Heat alongside Claire Foy and Sam Claflin, followed by a leading role in Melissa Young’s What Remains. She is also known for her roles in Fortitude, The Scandalous Lady W and The State. In 2017, she was seen in David Mitchell and Robert Webb’s Back and reprised her role in the second series. On the big screen, Jessica starred in the Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated Pride which follows the true story of a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984. Jessica was seen alongside Andrew Scott, George MacKay and Imelda Staunton.

Nava Mau

Nava Mau is an award-winning filmmaker, actress, and cultural worker. Nava wrote, produced, directed, and starred in Waking Hour, a short film that screened in festivals around the world. She was selected as a Production Fellow for the Netflix documentary Disclosure, and worked as a producer on the short film Work, which premiered at Sundance. She appeared next as a series regular in the HBO Max series Generation. She currently stars in the Netflix hit Baby Reindeer. She has also been awarded the NewFest Audience Award and the YoSoy Award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.

For 8 years, Nava worked in the fields of healing justice and culture change with community-based service providers, student organizations, and survivors of violence. Nava received her BA in Linguistics & Cognitive Science from Pomona College, after studying in Paris and conducting research in Guadalajara, Mexico. She then worked with survivors of violence for three years; first with immigrant survivors as a legal assistant, and then as a peer counselor and advocate for LGBTQ survivors of violence in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her range of experience also includes curriculum development, workshop & dialogue facilitation, and public speaking. All of her work has revolved around questions of culture and how to collectively change it for the better.
