Learn from technique-based demonstrations and lectures that touch upon art history and developing concepts to help you prepare for larger paintings in the studio. Students will develop their practice through group and individual exercises. Class focuses on the importance of composition but will also include technique and color theory principals. Take your practice to the next level in this unique class!
All classes scheduled to occur onsite are subject to state and federal safety guidelines. In the event that some, or all, of the meetings of the course cannot happen in person at 92NY, classes will be held at the schedule time in a virtual format via a video conferencing platform. The classes will continue through hands-on, at home activities, lectures, presentations, and / or group discussions. No refunds will be issued should any portion of a course be held virtually.

James Sheehan studied art history and fine arts at U.C. Berkeley and pursued graduate work at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, and in Rome, Italy. He moved to New York City in 1994. Recently, he has shown in various group exhibitions at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany, The Contemporary Art Factory in Tokyo, Japan, and the Brooklyn Museum, Rotunda Gallery and Ronald Feldman Gallery in New York. His solo exhibitions include the M du B, F, H & G Gallery in Montreal, Québec and the Galerie Schedler in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2001, he spoke about his work with Mouhktar Kocache at the Whitney Museum of Art as part of a program entitled "I.P.O. New Artists, New Curators." His awards include the ARCUS residency in Japan, LMCC 'World Views' residency in 2000, The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner grant. His website is www.jamessheehanwork.com.
