This course will inspire you to create unique compositions of New York City’s iconic architecture and vibrant urban life, guiding you to paint them in an abstract realism style using oil paints.
Led by Shima Rabiee, an architect and professional oil painter, the course offers a step-by-step approach to drawing and painting, with both group sessions and individualized one-on-one instruction. You’ll explore every stage of creating a cityscape painting, from the initial sketch to the final brushstroke. Suitable for all skill levels, this course will teach you how to capture a compelling reference photo and translate it onto canvas. Additionally, you’ll be introduced to extra painting tools and techniques designed to enhance your creative process and unlock your inner creativity!

Shima is a fine artist, architect, and a creative designer based in New York City. She earned her Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to that, she earned a Bachelor degree in Architecture. Since 2011, she has been practicing as a designer in New York City, San Francisco, and Boston. As well as the design field, she has been practicing as an artist for over 15 years. Her work is primarily focused on oil painting and drawing and described as an abstract realism. Parallel to teaching at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, she has participated in a number of workshops and exhibitions and has published a book titled Design Visualization. The book has been featured in the Landscape Architecture Magazine in 2020. Her interest is engaging the form as a fundamental element in her creative process and making a conclusive discussion through it, that is functional, inspiring and necessary in both design and art studios.
