Radio talk show host Leonard Lopate moderates a panel discussion about the concept and causes of evil. Panelists include Jack Levin, professor of sociology and criminology at Northeastern University, and Dr. Carl Goldberg, professor of psychiatry and sociology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York University. Levin reflects on his own research and experiences interacting with people widely regarded as “evil,” and shares examples of “evil” crimes and criminals. He also explores culture as a potential contributing factor to crime and antisocial behavior. Dr. Goldberg, however, argues that while social, economic, and mental conditions can contribute to malevolent behavior, the root cause of evil is ultimately one’s personal decision to avoid self-reflection. He states that, ultimately, “there are few situations where we are not aware of [our] options and choices.” The discussion is followed by questions from the audience. This event was originally filmed for an episode of America’s Most Wanted. Recorded May 3, 1998 at The 92nd Street Y, New York.
