On the Edge: Conversations with Robert Krulwich

The New Media

Nov 19, 2000

Television and radio correspondent Robert Krulwich speaks with Michael Kinsley, founding editor of Slate, about new media and American politics. This event is part of a series of conversations moderated by Robert Krulwich and sponsored by Scientific American. Krulwich and Kinsley discuss the recent presidential election between Al Gore and George W. Bush. At the time of this recording, the recount in Florida to determine the outcome of the election was still actively ongoing. Kinsley reflects on the “ugly realities of how voting works” and argues that ultimately, "democracy is an approximation.” He also comments on the responsibilities of the media during elections and the importance of intellectual honesty in journalism. The discussion is followed by questions from the audience.
