The Costs of Living
In this lecture hosted at 92NY, economist and educator Herbert Bienstock uses a set of charts (provided to the audience beforehand) to comment on the changing patterns of costs and structure in phase four of the American economic cycle. He discusses the “period of galloping inflation” since 1967, the broad range of factors that impact the cost of living, the social problems created by rising food costs, how American spending patterns have changed significantly over time, and why he believes that “you can't legislate an end to inflation.” The talk concludes with audience questions and subsequent discussion.
