Robert Mayers and John Schiff

Nov 23, 1987

Architectural critic Paul Goldberger moderates a discussion with architect Robert Mayers and artist and architect John Schiff, the co-founders of Mayers and Schiff Architects. Mayers and Schiff discuss and share slides of their previous projects, including the original TKTS Booth in Times Square, the tower at 2 Times Square, offices for both IBM and Aetna, Inc., and posters they designed for the 81st Street-Museum of Natural History subway station in Manhattan. Following their presentation, Mayers and Schiff speak with Goldberger about the challenges of designing Times Square as a civic space, including planning for amount of signage on buildings in the area and the dichotomy of preserving the character of Times Square while also cleaning it up and reflecting the culture of the times. The discussion concludes with audience questions.
