Hugh Hardy and Malcolm Holzman

Nov 16, 1987

Architectural critic Paul Goldberger moderates a discussion with architects Hugh Hardy and Malcolm Holzman, two of the co-founders of the architectural firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates (HHPA). Hardy and Holzman shares slides of and discuss their various projects, including Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts in Anchorage, Alaska, Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver, Colorado, the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, Oregon, and the renovation of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. Goldberger speaks with Hardy and Holzman about the dichotomy of their work, including the difference between urban and rural locations, formal and informal design elements, and historical forms and reinterpreted traditional forms. They also discuss the ways in which the notion of populism influences their work. The discussion concludes with audience questions.
