The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg in Conversation with MSNBC’s Alex Wagner: Trump and the Military

Sep 8, 2024

Jeffrey Goldberg, editor in chief of The Atlantic, discusses his new collection of essays, On Heroism: McCain, Milley, Mattis, and the Cowardice of Donald Trump. Expanding on his explosive reporting about Donald Trump’s trenchant disdain for military personnel, Goldberg draws upon decades of his own reporting, including key interviews with top officials such as the late Senator John McCain, former Defense Secretary James Mattis, and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mark Milley, all of whom came to oppose Trump. Hear what informed Goldberg’s portrait of a president whose impulse is to dismiss acts of heroism in pursuit of dangerously undemocratic processes and ideals, why he believes Trump is incapable of understanding sacrifice and selflessness, and, as Kirkus Reviews writes in a review of the book, “the frightening ease with which democracy can be undermined by those unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary to protect it.”
