Introducing the winners of the 2016 Discovery Poetry Contest: Ryan Fox, Carlie Hoffman, Gala Mukomolova and Miller Oberman.
Over the decades, 92Y’s poetry contest has discovered such poets as John Ashbery, Lucille Clifton, Mark Strand and Mary Jo Bang. Preliminary judges were Timothy Donnelly and Solmaz Sharif. The final judges were Thylias Moss, Paul Muldoon and Ellen Bryant Voigt.
Ryan Fox is the recipient of an MFA from the University of Virginia, where he was poetry editor of
Meridian. His poems have appeared in
The New Yorker,
Boston Review and elsewhere.
Carlie Hoffman is the author of
This Alaska, forthcoming from Four Way Books, 2021. She is the recipient of an Amy Award from
Poets & Writers and fellowships from Brooklyn Poets and Columbia University, where she received her MFA.
Gala Mukomolova is a Moscow-born, Brooklyn-raised poet and essayist. She is the author of
Without Protection (Coffee House Press 2019) and the chapbook
One Above One Below: Positions and Lamentations (YesYes Books 2018).
Miller Oberman’s first book,
The Unstill Ones (2017), a collection of original poems and Old English translations, was chosen by Susan Stewart for the Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets. He is the recipient of a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation.
