Woody De Othello (b. 1991 Miami, FL) is an Oakland based sculptor and painter. He makes surreal and often playful ceramic sculptures, featuring domestic and household objects inflated in size and imbued with emotion and spirituality. Othello’s work questions how human experiences are manifested through the everyday objects that surround us. His talk at 92NY will delve further into his practice and interests, ranging from Black music and the free jazz movement, the natural world and how Africanisms such as the Yoruba religion, the Bantu Kingdom, and Egyptian art have informed his sculpture making.

Woody De Othello

Woody De Othello (b. 1991 Miami, FL) completed his MFA at the California College of Arts in San Francisco in 2017. He received his BFA from Florida Atlantic University with a concentration in Ceramics. Othello has exhibited widely in group exhibitions, including the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (2022), Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia (2021), FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial (2018), the 33rd Ljubljana Biennial in Slovenia (2019), and “Sleight of Hand” at the Center for Craft in Asheville, NC (2020). His work is in many permanent collections, including but not limited to: Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; LACMA, Los Angeles and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 2018, Othello was commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission to create a permanent outdoor installation at The San Francisco International Airport. Othello’s work can currently be seen in Quiet as It’s Kept, the 85th Whitney Biennial, on view until September 5, 2022. He is represented by Jessica Silverman in San Francisco and KARMA in New York. Othello lives and works in Oakland, CA.
