Dan Doctoroff in Conversation with Danny Meyer: The Urbanist

Apr 25, 2024

Join former Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding for the City of New York Dan Doctoroff for a conversation on his role in the rebuilding of NYC at the turn of the 21st century with Shake Shack founder and chairman Danny Meyer — and his new book, The Urbanist. Dan Doctoroff played a central role in the transformation of New York City. In 2002, after Michael R. Bloomberg took office as mayor and with smoke still rising from the World Trade Center site, many questioned whether the city could rebound from the worst terrorist attack in the nation’s history. Instead, New York thrived ― entering a period of unprecedented growth, spurred by new neighborhoods, parks, office districts, cultural facilities, and more. At the center of many of these initiatives was Doctoroff, who served as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding from 2002-2007. Told through the stories of the individuals who worked with him, The Urbanist details the role he played in recreating New York during one of its most transformative eras. Join him and Meyer as they discuss how the post-9/11 era shaped NYC, how Doctoroff’s policies and initiatives continue to play out today, and the future of urban planning in America.
