Fiction with Emily Adrian

In this workshop, we will explore and experiment with the essential elements of fiction.

How do writers invent compelling, nuanced characters? What is the difference between conflict and tension? Stakes and plot? How can setting shape a narrative? Will a different point-of-view change a story’s conclusion? How does an author develop a unique voice? Why do some stories feel propulsive and urgent while others stagnate? How can dialogue complicate character and drive plot forward?

As a group, we will read and respond to one another’s work, identifying each story’s strengths and ambitions while discussing how the piece can become the best version of itself. Assigned reading will include fiction by Curtis Sittenfeld, Ling Ma, Camille Acker, and Kazuo Ishiguro. Close readings of these published stories will reveal specific craft techniques we can apply to our own works-in-progress.

Enrollment is limited to 12 students.
