Thank you for your interest in 92NY’s Teen Gems Program.
The program is offered through the 92nd Street Y, New York, a performing arts and community center on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, with the support of the DeBeers Group.
If selected for this program, you will participate in a free 12-week jewelry making class from Thursday, March 20, 4-6:30 with possible lectures by guest speakers in NYC’s jewelry industry. This form must be submitted by March 10 for the Spring 2025 Teems Gems program. If you have questions about the program, please email Jonathan Wahl or call 212.415.5564.
Accepted students must be available for 12 weekly meetings from 4-6:30 pm on the following Thursdays: 3/20, 27, 4/3, 10, 24, 5/1, 8,15, 22, 29, 6/5, 12. No class on Apr 17.
Students who miss more than 2 consecutive or 3 classes in total will be asked to leave the program.
Program Components
Course
The class will cover basic jewelry techniques such as fabrication, soldering, basic wax carving, casting, and basic stone settings. Students will begin to learn the properties of metal through sawing, piercing, and forming. Fabrication will be focused on bezel and tube settings for cabochon or round faceted stones. The final project of wax carving will cover the carving of wax for casting, ring sizing in wax, and a basic carved setting. The course will also include lectures and discussions with guest speakers from the jewelry industry (artists, designers, etc.)
Internship Opportunity
Students will have the opportunity to be placed with an internship through the Department of Education Career and Technical Education office and New York City Jewelry Week.
