Nursery School History

Established in 1938 and one of New York's most highly regarded nursery programs, the 92NY Nursery School has been and will continue to be …

  • A warm and creative atmosphere that fosters young children's imagination, curiosity, and intellect
  • A program that facilitates children's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth
  • Supporting children in their development of confidence and independence
  • Committed to building a strong sense of community and teaching children the joys of Jewish

Our Vision

To develop confident children who improve the world through their ability to think critically and contribute positively to their community.

Our Mission

To deliver an exceptional early childhood education experience for children, their families, and our faculty that is grounded in curiosity, community, and connection.

We do this through a curriculum focused on play and inquiry that celebrates Jewish culture and is attuned to each child's unique pattern of development.

Guiding Principles

What does a play- and inquiry-based curriculum mean?

  • Respect: Listen first. Grown-ups listen to each other and to children. We do not necessarily immediately answer questions posed by children.
  • Relationships: Instead, we engage in a loving, learning relationship model that supports children's self-direction and discovery.
  • Research: Educators and children research together, allowing students to internalize concepts and knowledge with a deep sense of accomplishment.
  • Resilience: Through doing so, our Nursery School provides an enriching experience for children to foster and practice resilience in a supportive, steadfast community.

Location

Our school is housed on the sixth floor and second floor of 92NY with eleven fully equipped, spacious classrooms and a library with an extensive collection of children’s books and resource materials. Two outdoor terraces and a rooftop playground are available for daily outdoor play, in all kinds of weather. Beginning in the fall of 2024, children and teachers will work together to care for our new urban garden; our school community will rely on fresh herbs and vegetables for classroom cooking experiences.

Too young for the Nursery School?

We enroll children ages 2.3 to 5 years old. Our youngest students must turn two years old by May 31st before beginning school in the fall. If your child isn’t yet old enough for the 92NY Nursery School, we encourage you to learn more about the 92NY Lipschultz Parenting Center, which offers classes for infants, babies and toddlers.
