Born in Kyrgyzstan, Katya Mihailova is a New York-based pianist who has performed extensively throughout the United States. She received a Master's Degree in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Arkady Aronov. She was awarded first prize in the 1997 Young Pianist competition in Central Asia, the Martha Lithmann Music Scholarship Award, and awarded a Rotary Scholarship in the United States. She debuted in New York with the Italian chamber orchestra Virtuosi Italiani, and The New York Times described her playing as "deeply impassionate."
Ms. Mihailova is a dedicated performer of contemporary repertoire and has premiered works by numerous composers. She is a founding member of neoLIT contemporary ensemble, which is devoted to the presentation of women's compositions. She has appeared, both solo and in chamber performances, in such venues as Weill Recital Hall, Le Poisson Rouge, Bryant Park Festival, Bargemusic, Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center, Ethical Culture Society and New York Public Library, among others. In 2007, her performance with Beirut in the Wordless Music Series was broadcast on WNYC. Recent engagements include performances in Greene Space at the New York Public Radio and the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada. Ms. Mihailova has been widely sought-after as an instructor. She is on the piano faculty at the Brooklyn Conservatory as well as Concordia Conservatory, and maintains a private studio in New York. In the summer of 2009, Ms. Mihailova taught piano at the National Institute of Music in Afghanistan as well as at Kabul's University.
