John-Mario Sevilla (92Y Harkness Director of Professional Development and Performance; MA, Teachers College; MFA, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) hails from Ka’ehu, Maui. Formerly the Director of Harkness Dance Center, Manager of School Programs and Director of Education at New York City Ballet, he has been a teacher both here and abroad to dancers of all ages and levels. From 1988 to 1996, John-Mario was a performer, choreographic collaborator, rehearsal director and teacher for Pilobolus, for which he toured internationally and appeared on several national telecasts. He has also worked with choreographers Rebecca Stenn, Lisa Giobbi, Nikolais and Louis, Shapiro and Smith, Janis Brenner, Anna Sokolow and Bill Cratty, juggler Michael Moschen, film animator Laura Margulies, drag performing artists Sherry Vine, poet John Unterecker and Navajo sandpainter and healer Walking Thunder. Mr. Sevilla’s choreography has appeared in New York City at Movement Research/Judson Church, LaMama, Dance Theater Workshop, St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bouwerie, Columbia University, ABC No Rio, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, The Asia Society, Riverside Church and Bronx Academy of Art and Dance. He currently is a student of the hula with kumu hula Hōkūlani Holt of Pā‘ū O Hi‘iaka on the island of Maui. He has also studied with kumu hula June Ka’ililani Tanoue.
