Grace Wright is a Brooklyn based vocalist, songwriter and multi instrumentalist originally from Houston, Texas. Writing her first songs on the steps of her family’s Dallas apartment as a young girl, her parents joked she might grow up to sing the blues. As life would have it, Grace graduated from the internationally acclaimed University of North Texas jazz program with a degree in Jazz Vocal Performance and Music Theory. Growing up with the vocal stylings of torch singers, folk artists, world music and rock bands in her ear, Grace has sung in a variety of genres, from Tropicalia Gilberto Gil tribute bands to avant garde rock groups along with jazz, folk and indie pop gigs mixed in between. Her thirst for knowledge and creative expression has led her to picking up the drums, bass, guitar, piano and ukulele.
Since 2009, Grace’s empathy combined with her intuitive strategic mind have benefited hundreds of music students in New York, Brooklyn and Texas. As a teacher, Grace believes compassion is necessary to allow students the safe space to be vulnerable with their weaknesses and to grow as musicians. After graduating, Grace studied privately for several years with internationally recognized pop vocal coach and mentor, Kim Chandler, mastering vocal pedagogy, Estill based vocal techniques and growing as a coach. Her interest in Feldenkrais enhances not only her vocal lessons, but also the way she approaches creativity in songwriting.
During her time in Brooklyn, she has worked as the head vocal coach at the Brooklyn Music Factory, instructing students and mentoring fellow faculty members, authored a book of vocal exercises, and taught piano, songwriting and advanced band classes. In 2016, she created and ran the hit camp “5 Songs In 5 Days”, encouraging young teens to let go of their inner critic and embrace their creativity through songwriting. Over the course of her career, she has coached several teen bands and students in recording and releasing EPs. She currently teaches privately and through in home songwriting lessons with NYC’s Blue Balloon. Grace can be seen singing with her band Botanist On Alp and on background vocals and keys for several projects.
