  • As Kamala Harris makes history as the first Black woman to be nominated to a major-party national ticket, we take a look back to the evening of January 11, 2019, when she spent more than an hour in conversation on our stage.

“She had the capacity to make you feel that there was nobody else in the room she wanted to speak to but you,” said Sue Solomon, Senior Associate Director of 92Y Talks, who produced the event. “You knew you were in the presence of someone really special.”

The Senator openly discussing her ideas and ideals, her life in the criminal justice system, the big influences on her life, the nature of the fight for civil rights, the disparities in areas like our health system – and her message of hope, unity, and her belief that, after all that has happened in the past few years, the vast majority of us have more in common than what separates us.

You can watch her inspiring talk again in our archives. And don’t miss her incomparable impression of her Jewish mother-in-law!
