May 21, 2021 marks 50 years since the release of one of the most iconic, enduring and resonant albums of all time – Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. Seven-time Grammy winning bassist, artistic director, broadcaster and educator Christian McBride curates an exploration and celebration of the landmark album and groundbreaking artist.

What’s Going On is inseparable from Marvin Gaye’s legacy, but there was more to his artistry. For this final event in our Marvin Gaye celebration, music director Christian McBride enlisted the talents of Ray Angry – pianist, producer, arranger and go-to musician for artists including Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, The Roots, and many more. Angry has assembled a knockout band, with three singers who give voice to Gaye’s songs, including the mesmerizing Victory Boyd, who was busking in Central Park before being discovered and championed by Jay-Z. They take on songs that reflect Gaye’s personal struggles, and they heat up our stage with the sensual, intoxicating, R&B groove that made Gaye the artist who defined soul music in the 1970s. Set list includes “Let’s Get It On,” “I Want You,” “Distant Lover,” “Trouble Man” and more. Join us!

Victory Boyd is an extraordinarily talented young performer whose poignant music and magnetic sound—a fusion of folk, funk and rhythm and blues—resounds beyond any single genre, and has been compared to that of legendary artists Tracy Chapman, Roberta Flack, and Nina Simone. Her distinctive vocals provide a rich mosaic of raw sentiment, revelatory honesty, and heightened poeticism. Her piercing voice ranges from fiery and bold to vulnerable and melancholy, and tenderly blend unvarnished truth with channeled emotion that penetrates the soul. Victory’s personally-charged songs bookmark moments in her evolution. Her vulnerabilities have helped her shape a textured and layered sound that is self-expressive, reflective, and relatable. Her peerless gift of storytelling mixes thought-provoking lyrics with the truth, pains and complexities of life through a variety of sonic narratives. She creates unchartered music that resonates with the human experience and that is garnering her adoration and acclaim across ever-expanding audiences.

In 2016, Victory captured the attention of mega rap superstar JAY Z, who personally signed her and Infinity’s Song to his RocNation music label. Since then, she has gained extensive experience in studio recording, directing, live performance, and leading full bands as she integrates rhythm, horn, and string sections. Her command of instruments, coupled with her vocal aerobics and lyrical mastery, allowed her to successfully produce her own EP and debut album (The Broken Instrument) and have made her one of modern music’s brightest stars—and one of RocNation’s most treasured artists.

As Victory prepares to release her sophomore album, Confessions of a Lonely Girl, in Fall 2021, she’s sure to cement her eminent status as one of music’s most talented and charismatic rising stars.

Two time GRAMMY® award-winning Casey Benjamin is the first original member of the Robert Glasper Experiment. Through his melodic ingenuity on the vocoder, textual mastery on the keytar and spiky virtuosity on the alto, soprano and tenor saxophone, Benjamin gives the Experiment its most defining sound that has enabled it to gain international acclaim in the jazz, R&B and hip-hop scenes on such trailblazing albums as Black Radio (Blue Note Records, 2012), Black Radio 2 (Blue Note Records, 2013) and ArtScience (Blue Note Records, 2016).

In addition to the Experiment, Benjamin toured with singer Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) and has performed/toured/recorded with a string of other stellar musicians from jazz to hip hop to pop including singer Betty Carter, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Mos Def, Q-Tip, A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, Diddy, Wyclef Jean, Anderson Paak, Pusha T, Common, Maxwell, Solange, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. With singer and songwriter Nicky Guiland, Benjamin co-leads the funk-forward combo, HEAVY, which has released three discs – HEAVY (Kindred Spirits, 2000), Jazz Money$$ (BBE, 2007) and First Sessions (Kindred Spirits, 2008).

Although Benjamin remains a central member of the Robert Glasper Experiment and continues to collaborate with various artists, he’s working on his forthcoming solo project coming out soon.
