Join award-winning comedian Rose Matafeo for a screening and conversation with John Oliver on her hilarious new Max Original comedy special, Rose Matafeo: On and On and On, which debuts Thursday, December 19.

Rose Matafeo’s new stand-up special crackles with insightful, self-deprecating wit as she gets candid on life in her 30s — dating culture, supporting friends through breakups, the stark differences between herself and her parents at the same age, how aging has impacted her comedy, and more. In a candid conversation, hear about the making of the special — how she took a 16,000-word note on her phone and turned it into comic gold, how her act has changed since she broke out in her 20s, stories from her life in comedy, and more.

Rose Matafeo

Rose Matafeo is a BAFTA nominated comedian, writer and actor from New Zealand.

In 2018, Rose’s critically acclaimed stand-up show Horndog won the award for “Best Show” at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was also nominated for “Best Show” at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Following its success live, it was subsequently recorded as a special for HBO MAX.

Most recently, Rose’s newest comedy special, On and On and On, received a nomination for “Best Show” at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and is set to release on HBO MAX on December 19, 2024. Additionally, she voiced the character of Loto in Disney’s Moana 2, which broke Thanksgiving weekend records at the box office with a massive $221 million domestic debut.

Rose’s beloved sitcom, Starstruck, which she created, wrote and starred in was commissioned by BBC3 in the UK and HBO Max in the US in 2021. The first two seasons of Starstruck were streamed over 8.2m times on BBC iPlayer in the UK where it became the channel’s best-performing new comedy of the year before airing on HBO Max in the US. It was also pre-sold to over 100 territories including Australia (ABC) and New Zealand (TVNZ).

Rose is a regular face on TV having been featured on Have I Got News For You (BBC One), The Royal Variety Performance (ITV) W1A (BBC One), Unspun with Matt Forde (Dave), Jon Richardson’s Ultimate Worrier (Dave), 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4) 8 Out Of 10 Cats (E4), Hypothetical (Dave), There’s Something About Movies (Sky One), Dave Gorman’s Terms and Conditions Apply (Dave) House of Games (BBC Two), Big Zuus Big Eats (Dave) and The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice (Channel 4) in the UK. She was also a contestant on series nine of Taskmaster (Dave/Channel 4) and also hosted Junior Taskmaster (Channel 4).

In the US, Rose has performed a stand-up slot on Conan (TBS). In New Zealand, Rose was the lead writer and star of the sketch show Funny Girls (TV3), and a regular on panel show 7 Days (Three Now NZ). 2020 saw her star to great acclaim in the feature Baby, Done (Piki Films). She also co-hosts the podcast Boners of the Heart with fellow comic Alice Snedden.

John Oliver

John Oliver is an Emmy and Writer’s Guild Award-winning writer and comedian. He is the host and producer of the HBO show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which has been the recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including 28 Primetime Emmys, 7 Writers Guild Awards, 9 Producers Guild Awards, 4 Critics’ Choice Television Awards, 4 Television Critics Association Awards, and 3 Peabodys.

From 2006-2013, John was a correspondent on The Daily Show and won three Primetime Emmys for his writing on the show. Oliver was the program’s guest host for a two-month period in 2013. Until 2015, he also co-hosted the hugely popular weekly satirical podcast, The Bugle, with Andy Zaltzman.

Oliver has his comedic roots in stand-up and continues to perform to sold-out venues across the globe. He hosted four seasons of his own stand-up series for Comedy Central, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show (2010-2013). Prior to this, he starred in the stand-up special John Oliver: Terrifying Times (2008).

As an actor, Oliver voiced the character Zazu in Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and had a recurring role in the NBC sitcom, Community (2009-2014). Other notable film and television credits include Big Mouth, Paramount’s Wonder Park, The Detour, Bob’s Burgers, Danger Mouse, The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2, and Rick & Morty.
