Met Opera star Susanna Phillips brings her radiant soprano and presence to 92Y’s stage for the first time in a performance with the New York Philharmonic’s principal clarinet and star soloist Anthony McGill and one of her closest collaborators, pianist Myra Huang.
Their program features Schubert’s lovely but rarely performed Shepherd on the Rock (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen) — the last of his more than 600 songs — blending their gorgeous sounds in this beautiful work for soprano, clarinet and piano. The Schubert is paired with the world premiere of a new piece written for the same instrumentation by composer James Lee III, which sets the stunning poetry of Lou Ella Hickman. Then, William Grant Still’s lush Romance is followed by Schubert’s “Arpeggione” sonata, a melodic masterwork written for a now-forgotten instrument and adapted here for clarinet.
Concert stream available for one week from date of broadcast.
