Students and their teachers in grades 6-8 join celebrated author Mahogany L. Browne for a discussion on her new book Chlorine Sky: a novel-in-verse about an African American teen dealing with fractured friendships, first romances and her own empowering coming-of-age.

Package #1: $135 per class*

  • Suite of educational resources, including video lessons, discussion questions, and activities to help teachers introduce their students to the featured presenter and the work under study
  • Live virtual event with the featured presenter
  • Opportunity for student work to be published on the Young Leaders Series website

Package #2: $295 per class*

All of package 1 plus:

  • 2 live, virtual workshops led by a 92Y Teaching Artist.

*Maximum number of students per class is 35. For Package #2, schools must enroll a minimum of 2 classes per grade; workshops with a 92Y Teaching Artist are done per school per grade, not per class.

92Y offers partial and full subsidies to schools that require financial support to participate in the Young Leaders Series. To apply for a subsidy, please email us a brief description of your circumstances.

This event is produced through 92Y’s Young Leaders Series: a virtual education program that connects classrooms across the country with leading figures in the arts and humanities. The Series invites students to discover their own artistic and intellectual passions, identify resources to pursue those passions and shape the future of their world.

Mahogany L. Browne

Mahogany L. Browne is a writer, organizer & educator. She is the Executive Director of Bowery Poetry Club, Artistic Director of Urban Word NYC, and Poetry Coordinator at St. Francis College. Browne has received fellowships from Agnes Gund, Air Serenbe, Cave Canem, Poets House, Mellon Research and Rauschenberg. She is the author of Woke: A Young Poet's Call to Justice, Woke Baby & Black Girl Magic (Macmillan), Kissing Caskets (Yes Yes Books) & Dear Twitter (Penmanship Books). She is the founder of the Woke Baby Book Fair (a nationwide diversity literature campaign) and, as an Arts for Justice grantee, is completing her first book of essays on mass incarceration, investigating its impact on women and children. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
