New York City premiere of AMOC’s With Care.

With Care is a visceral, moving work for two dancers (Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, both former stars of the Batsheva Dance Company) and two violinists (Keir GoGwilt and Miranda Cuckson). Building on the cross-disciplinary work of A Study on Effort (“chilling, thrilling rawness” — The New York Times), With Care investigates the dynamics of caregiving, carelessness, and loss through a theatrical fusion of dance and music.

With Care was co-commissioned by ODC Theater and AMOC (American Modern Opera Company) in 2018.

Kaufmann Concert Hall is where audiences witnessed iconic artists including Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jose Limon and Pearl Primus push boundaries, on this historic stage, audiences experienced the evolution of an art form.

Join us as we return to this stage and provide a platform for modern-day pioneers to take risks, to remove boundaries and to transport us into the future of dance.

AMOC

Founded in 2017, the mission of AMOC (American Modern Opera Company) is to build and share a body of collaborative work. As a group of dancers, singers, musicians, writers, directors, composers, choreographers, and producers united by a core set of values, AMOC artists pool their resources to create new pathways that connect creators and audiences in surprising and visceral ways. The company’s upcoming projects include The No One’s Rose, a new music-dance-theater work created in partnership with San Francisco’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Stanford Live, and Comet Poppea, which includes an AMOC-commissioned opera by composer George Lewis and is produced in collaboration with Anthony Roth Costanzo and Cath Brittan. Additionally, AMOC will serve as the Ojai Music Festival’s 2022 Music Director, only the second ensemble, and first explicitly interdisciplinary company, to hold the position in the festival’s 75-year history.

Past projects include Zack Winokur’s production of Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarrón, starring Davóne Tines, which has been performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Repertory Theater; a new arrangement of John Adams’s El Niño, premiered at The Met Cloisters as part of Julia Bullock’s season-long residency at the Met Museum; Davóne Tines’s and Winokur's Were You There, a meditation on black lives lost in recent years to police violence; and Bobbi Jene Smith and Keir GoGwilt’s dance/music works With Care and A Study on Effort, which have been produced at San Francisco’s ODC Theater, Toronto’s Luminato Festival, and elsewhere. Conor Hanick’s performance of CAGE, Zack Winokur’s production of John Cage’s music for prepared piano, was cited as the best recital of the year by The New York Times in 2018 and The Boston Globe in 2019.

Bobbi Jene Smith is an alumnus of The Juilliard School, North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. Her choreography has been presented by The Batsheva Dance Company, CORPUS of The Royal Danish Ballet, LADP, VAIL Dance Festival, LaMama Experimental Theater, and The Martha Graham Dance Company. In 2019 she was awarded The Harkness Promise Award and was The Martha Duffy Resident Artist at Baryshnikov Art Center.

Smith’s film and video work include Annihilation, directed by Alex Garland starring Natalie Portman; MA, directed by Celia Rowlson-Hall; and Yossi, directed by Eytan Fox. The documentary Bobbi Jene, which follows Smith’s trajectory of leaving a dance company to create her own work, swept the Tribeca Film Festival, winning Best Documentary, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing in 2017. In 2018, Bobbi starred in and choreographed the feature films Mari, directed by Georgia Parris and choreographed by Maxine Doyle, which premiered at BFI; and Aviva, directed by Boaz Yakin, which was a SXSW selection.

Smith has been a certified GAGA teacher for the past 15 years and has taught Ohad Naharin’s repertory in schools and universities around the world. She is part-time faculty at The Juilliard School, and is on guest faculty at NYU and UArts.

Or Schraiber studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. In 2010, Schraiber joined the Batsheva Dance Company, in which he danced for seven years. In parallel to his time in the company, he served at the IDF for three years. In 2017, Schraiber moved to New York City to study acting at the Stella Adler Studio. In 2019, he starred in and co-choreographed Boaz Yakin’s feature film Aviva. Later that year, he starred as Thaddeus and choreographed scenes in Terrence Malick’s The Way of the Wind and appeared in the national Broadway tour of The Band’s Visit.

In 2020, he created five short dance films commissioned by the Corpus Dance Company in collaboration with Bobbi Jene Smith. Later that year, he collaborated with Smith once more to create Solo at Dusk, commissioned by the Los Angeles Dance Project. Throughout the years, Schraiber’s choreography and movement direction have been seen in videos by Wim Wenders, Asaf Avidan, Netta Barzilai, The Antlers, Yemen Blues, and more. He has directed, choreographed, and appeared in several award-winning short films that were presented by film festivals all over the world.

Keir GoGwilt

Keir GoGwilt is a violinist, writer, and musicologist, whose work spans a range of critical and creative disciplines. As a violinist he has been described as a “formidable performer” (New York Times) noted for his “evocative sound” (London Jazz News) and “finger-busting virtuosity” (San Diego Union Tribune). He is a core member of AMOC, and he co-composes, improvises, and performs music with bassist Kyle Motl as part of their duo, Treesearch.

He has soloed with groups including the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Chinese National Symphony, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Santiago, the Bowdoin International Music Festival Orchestra, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Manhattan School of Music Chamber Sinfonia, and the La Jolla Symphony. He works closely with composers Matthew Aucoin, Celeste Oram, and Carolyn Chen, choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith, bassist Mark Dresser (as part of the Dresser Quintet/Septet), taonga puoro musician Rob Thorne, and percussionist/conductor Steven Schick.

He has been a featured artist at festivals/series including Luminato, PS 122 COIL, Rockport Chamber Music, Spoleto (in Italy), Carolina Performing Arts, the American Repertory Theater, Music Academy of the West, Darmstadt, and YellowBarn, has released records on Tzadik, Clean Feed, and 577 Records, and has published articles with Naxos Musicology and the Orpheus Institute Series (Leuven Press). He studied literature at Harvard University, where he was awarded the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts, and is a PhD candidate in Music at UC San Diego. His research looks at performance pedagogies engaging histories of science, aesthetics, and phenomenology. He teaches a hybrid seminar/performance workshop, “Histories and Philosophies of Performance,” which draws from his research and practice.

Miranda Cuckson

Miranda Cuckson delights listeners internationally as soloist and collaborator in a wide range of music, from older eras to the most current creations. She has in recent years become one of the most acclaimed and passionately committed performers of contemporary music, playing innumerable concerts and premieres of new works and moving new creations more into the center of musical life.

Venues and festivals have included the Berlin Philharmonie, Suntory Hall, Casa da Musica Porto, Teatro Colón, Guggenheim and Cleveland Museums, Art Institute of Chicago, Strathmore, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music series, and the Bard, Marlboro, Portland, Music Mountain, West Cork (Ireland), SinusTon (Germany), and LeGuessWho and Soundsofmusic (Netherlands) festivals. Miranda made her Carnegie Hall debut playing Piston’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the American Symphony Orchestra, and recently premiered new violin concertos written for her by Georg Friedrich Haas in Tokyo, Stuttgart and Porto, and by Marcela Rodriguez in Mexico City. Her upcoming solo performances include Wien Modern, Time Spans, the 2021 Ojai Festival with John Adams, and the 2022 Grafenegg Festival playing the Haas Concerto. She is a member of the interdisciplinary collective AMOC, which was named artistic director for the Ojai Festival in 2022.

In addition to working with many of today’s emerging artists, Miranda has worked with celebrated composers including Dutilleux, Carter, Adès, Sciarrino, Boulez, Crumb, Saariaho, Mackey, Davidovsky, Ran, Rzewski, Currier, Iyer, and Murail. Composers who have written pieces for her include Jason Eckardt, Reiko Füting, Michael Hersch, George Lewis, Wang Lu, Katharina Rosenberger, Jeffrey Mumford, Aida Shirazi, Steve Lehman, and Harold Meltzer (Library of Congress commission).

Her acclaimed discography includes the Ligeti, Korngold and Ponce violin concertos; albums of music of American composers Finney, Shapey, Martino, Sessions, Carter, Glass, Hersch, Mumford, and Weesner; her ECM Records album of Bartók, Schnittke and Lutoslawski; Melting the Darkness, an album of microtonal and electronics pieces by Xenakis, Bianchi, Rowe and more; and her recording of Luigi Nono’s La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura for violin and electronics (Urlicht AV), which was named a Best Recording of 2012 by the New York Times.

Miranda teaches at the Mannes School of Music at New School University in New York. She studied at The Juilliard School, from Pre-College through her doctorate, and won Juilliard’s Presser Award.
