Jazz alto saxophonist and three-time Grammy nominee Lakecia Benjamin pushes the boundaries of what jazz can be.
Honing her style performing with Clark Terry and Terri Lynne Carrington, with artists from Alicia Keys to Missy Elliott to Anita Baker, and a brilliant weeklong appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Benjamin has arrived at a music all her own. R&B, funk, soul, and Latin influences are evident in everything she performs, whether inspired by Coltrane or Prince. She joins us with a pair of special guests: the charismatic, red-hot vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, who has taken the jazz world by storm ever since winning first prize at the International Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition a decade ago, and 2024 NEA Jazz Master Gary Bartz, who performed with Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Max Roach, and countless others. Hear them in the hall where sax masters from John Coltrane to Sonny Rollins performed – and where new masters take root.
