Apple TV+’s award-winning and globally acclaimed sweeping drama series Pachinko earned 11 international awards including a Peabody Award, an American Film Institute Award, a Critics Choice Award and a Gotham Independent Film Award, and makes its highly-anticipated return for season two on Friday, August 23.

Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, Pachinko, told in three languages — Korean, Japanese, and English, is a deeply moving story of love and survival across four generations, told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja. In season two, the parallel stories pick up in Osaka in 1945, where Sunja is forced to make dangerous decisions for her family’s survival during World War II, and in Tokyo in 1989, which finds Solomon exploring new, humble beginnings. Go behind the scenes of this remarkable production with creator / writer / executive producer Soo Hugh, executive producers, Michael Ellenberg on behalf of Media Res and Theresa Kang, for Blue Marble Pictures, and actors Minha Kim, Jin Ha and Lee Minho in conversation with Laura Kim. After the season two premiere episode screening, they will discuss the authenticity portrayed throughout the series, the rewards of adapting a beloved bestseller for the screen, what inspired the actors’ masterful interpretations of their characters, and the show’s legacy as “a show whose groundbreaking vision of Korean history will be remembered as a television landmark” (NPR).

Soo Hugh is a television and film writer/producer, and showrunner of Pachinko (Apple TV+) which won a 2023 Peabody Award, the 2022 Best Foreign Language Series at the Critics Choice Awards and Breakthrough Series at the Gotham Awards. Hugh won the Humanitas Prize for Drama Teleplay for the pilot episode.

Additionally, she is producing an adaptation of the cult classic Wisconsin Death Trip and an undisclosed film to be written by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Lynn Nottage, and documentary filmmaker, Tony Gerber.

Previously, Hugh was the co-showrunner of the first season of The Terror, the critically acclaimed drama produced by Ridley Scott and starring Jared Harris, Ciaran Hinds and Tobias Menzies. She also created The Whispers, based on a Ray Bradbury short story and produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Mark Romanek. Other television credits include writing on The Killing and Under the Dome. In partnership with Universal Content Productions (UCP), Hugh also founded The Thousand Miles Project, an incubator program committed to helping emerging AAPI writers tell their stories and jumpstart lasting writing careers in the entertainment industry.

Hugh earned her BA from Yale University and her MFA from University of Southern California’s film school. She is based in New York City.

Michael Ellenberg is the founder and chairman of Media Res, a motion picture production and finance company and television studio, which he launched in 2017. Through Media Res, Ellenberg develops, produces and finances premium content for global markets, employing a fund to finance series production, in addition to a development fund to commission scripts and option material. Media Res finances production on both the in-house slate and top-tier projects from outside producers and suppliers.

In addition to being an executive producer on the critically acclaimed, award-winning Apple TV+ series Pachinko, he is also an executive producer on the hit Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell; and the limited series Scenes from a Marriage, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Media Res also recently debuted the absurdist comedy I’m a Virgo from filmmaker Boots Riley, and the climate change anthology series Extrapolations from Scott Z. Burns at Apple TV+, with Ellenberg serving as an EP on both.

Prior to founding Media Res, Ellenberg was the executive vice president of HBO programming, overseeing development and production of dramatic series for the network. During his tenure, he developed and oversaw the production of such acclaimed series as Westworld, The Leftovers, Big Little Lies, True Detective, The Young Pope and The Deuce. Ellenberg also oversaw Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood, including Game of Thrones two Emmy Award-winning seasons for Best Drama. He also co-executive produced the final season of The Leftovers, which received wide acclaim. Earlier in his career, from 2007-2011, Ellenberg was a senior vice president at Scott Free Productions, working closely with directors Ridley and Tony Scott. There he produced such films as Prometheus, Robin Hood, Cyrus and Stoker. Before that, Ellenberg served as vice president of Development at Scott Rudin Productions.

Theresa Kang is the CEO of Blue Marble Pictures and Blue Marble Management. Blue Marble Pictures has an exclusive multi-year overall producing deal at Apple TV+ for film and television, where Kang focuses on producing works that amplify underrepresented voices and stories.

Blue Marble produces the drama series Pachinko for Apple TV+ based on the bestselling novel. Pachinko has won a Critics Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Series, an Independent Spirit Award for Best New Ensemble Cast, and a Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Series Longform. In addition, it was nominated for a Hollywood Critics Association Award for Best Series and Best International Series, and an Independent Spirit Award for Best New Scripted Series.

The company is producing the upcoming series The White Darkness, based on The New Yorker article by David Grann, to star Tom Hiddleston. The company is also developing features for Apple TV+ including an adaptation of Ted Chiang’s novella Hell is the Absence of God.

She was the first Asian American to be promoted to Partner at WME. Additionally, she was the architect and co- founder of Empower, a company-wide program promoting diversity, inclusion and mentorship.

Last year, she joined the Los Angeles Board of Governors for The Paley Center for Media. The Board advises the Paley Center on its strategic goals and Los Angeles programming calendar and commits their time to help the Paley Center forge new partnerships and expand its constituency to ensure the Paley Center stays at the forefront of media and technology on the West Coast and remains the preeminent media organization for the industry and the public. In 2019, she was appointed to Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti’s Entrepreneurs in Residence for the Evolve Entertainment Fund focused on increasing diversity initiatives in the entertainment industry. In the same year, she supported the $330M California tax production credit requiring the addition of diversity provisions including above- the-line diversity reporting. She is also a member of the Advisory Board for Korean American Leaders in Hollywood (KALH) organization. Her philanthropic passions include Harvest Home which supports houseless pregnant women and their children, as well as The Underground Museum.

Kang has been featured on numerous prestigious industry lists including The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Power 100, The Hollywood Reporter’s 50 Agents Empowering Diverse Voices in Hollywood, Gold House’s annual A100 List, and Variety’s 2022 TV Producers Impact List.

Minha Kim’s starring role in the critically acclaimed series Pachinko is only the Korean actress’s second professional role and her first U.S. production. During an open casting call, Kim’s audition so impressed the filmmakers that she was offered the central role of ‘Young Sunja.’ For her performance, Kim was nominated for a Gotham Award for Outstanding Performance in a New Series and was honored as Breakout in TV at the 2022 Asian American Award’s Unforgettable Gala. The series — which is based on The New York Times bestselling novel of the same name — won a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series – Long Format, an Independent Spirit Award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series, and a Critics Choice Award for Best Foreign Language Series. The series was also nominated for two Hollywood Critics Association Awards for Best International Series and Best Streaming Series, Drama, and was honored by the American Film Institute as one of the Top 10 TV Shows of 2022. Both Kim’s performance and the show were highlighted in numerous year-end critics’ lists of best performance and/or series.

Jin Ha is one of today’s most compelling emerging talents, receiving wide acclaim for his performances both on screen and stage. Recently, Ha was seen starring in Thomas Kail’s Broadway production of Hamilton: An American Musical at the Richard Rodgers Theater in the role of ‘Aaron Burr.’

Previous television credits include Devs with Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno; season one of the series Love Life opposite Anna Kendrick; and the Grammy-nominated and Emmy-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert as ‘Annas’ alongside John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Alice Cooper and Brandon Victor Dixon.

Lee starred and delivered a stellar performance as ‘Hansu’ in Apple TV+'s Pachinko portraying the character's irresistible and deadly charm, as well as his complex emotions as he struggles between ambition and love. His performance earned him two awards at the 2022 Gold Derby TV Awards, including Best Actor and Actor of the Year.

Recently, Minho finished filming the highly anticipated When the Stars Gossip, the first Korean TV series set in space and is gearing up for its release. In the series, Minho plays ‘Gong Ryong,’ a gynecologist with a mission who travels to a space station as a space tourist.

Minho is best known for starring in the series The King: Eternal Monarch. Other notable roles include the series Boys over Flowers, The Heirs, as well as films Gangnam Blues and Bounty Hunters.

As an actor, Minho has contributed substantially to the rise and success of Korean dramas worldwide. In 2013, the series The Heirs transcended the South Korean market and had millions of viewers from around the world. The following year, Minho received a commendation from the Korean government for his contributions in raising the profile of Korean content globally. He is currently in a worldwide endorsement deal with Hugo Boss and Fendi.

Laura Kim

Laura Kim is the co-Creative Director of Oscar de la Renta and the founder and co-Creative Director of MONSE. She is one of the most prominent, influential and respected names in the fashion industry.

Kim was born in South Korea and showed a keen interest in fashion from a young age where she learned to sketch and sew from her grandparents who made cloth. After growing up in Canada, Kim moved to New York at age 18 to attend the Pratt Institute. During her studies, Laura interned with Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta. Upon graduation, Oscar de la Renta offered her a position in his studio, and she became Oscar’s design director at the age of 25. Laura worked for Oscar for 12 years until his passing, during which time she honed her skills and gained invaluable experience in the industry.

After Oscar’s passing, Laura and her business partner, Fernando Garcia, started their own brand, Monse. Within two years of launching Monse, they were asked to become the creative directors of Oscar de la Renta.

Today, Laura and Fernando run both brands with their unique vision of design, texture and color. Their versatile designs can be seen on the First Lady of the United States to popular music icons including Blackpink and Doja Cat.
