This class will examine why jewelry was a plausible artistic outlet for many prominent painters and sculptors, from Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso to Louise Nevelson and Anish Kapoor.
Whether it was the opportunity to recreate in miniature what they were able to achieve on a large scale or as an altogether new outlet for their fervent ideas. In addition to familiarizing ourselves with some of the most prominent examples of artist jewels created, we will also delve into the stories of the skilled goldsmiths and workshops who took on the task of bringing this work to life, like GEM Montebello, François Hugo, and Mario Masenza. Lastly, the class with spend time discussing the market for this work and familiarizing themselves with prominent collectors. Three lectures will be supplemented with two sessions with guest speaker.
