Join art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo for a look at New York City through the prism of one of its defining eras of art, architecture, and design.
Over the course of four sessions, Laudien-Meo will guide participants through the mid-nineteenth century period known as the American Renaissance that gave birth to now iconic elements of the city’s landscape and architecture—including Stanford White’s buildings, Tiffany and La Farge’s American glass windows, neoclassical monuments, mural paintings, and more.
Participants will gain a greater understanding of how architects like Stanford White and artists like Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge simultaneously paid homage to European tradition while boldly laying the foundation for New York’s modern style. Learn about the beginnings of the US’s competitions on the world stage during the Crystal Palace Exhibition, our very first World’s Fair, explore how the growing wealth of New York’s industrialists and businessmen afforded dazzling architectural commissions like Madison Square Garden, take a closer look at the era’s public art, murals, and monuments, as well as the incredibly fast-growing importance of photography at the time.
This program will take place on September 30, October 7, 14, and 21 from 12-1:30 pm ET.
This program will take place live online with an opportunity to interact with the speaker. Sessions will be recorded and made available to patrons for later viewing.
