Next session – May 1: Socialism and Israel — Celebrating “Yom Ha’poalim” (workers day)
On May 1 international workers day, or “May Day,” is celebrated in different countries all around the world. This day, that originated from the 19th century workers strike in the US and then adapted into a day of celebration of workers’ rights by socialist movements and parties, is also celebrated in modern day Israel.
From its beginning, the state of Israel has foundations of socialism and social welfare. Throughout the years, Israel has adapted with the world around it and lost many of its earlier socialist attributes, yet there are still large movements in Israeli society working, living, and educating by this ideology.
In this session we will meet Liana Meirom Asif, who will teach us about the history of socialism in Israel, the significance of May Day in Israel today and will share her own personal story if growing up in one of the Zionist socialist movements and choosing to live in a collective as an adult.
