Playing by Ear: Functional Piano and Music Theory

This course helps pianists develop their skills at playing the piano without reading notes from a page.

Students learn how to use their ear to learn and play music, and how to make use of theory concepts like scales, chords, key signatures and rhythmic sub-division. Topics include: how to accompany yourself, how to play with other people, learning chords by ear and creating distinctive textures on the piano. The course repertoire focuses on well-known folk and pop songs.
