Students will make a small frame, learn to create filigree wire by twisting and flattening the wire, create traditional spirals and coils, cut, and set the design elements and solder everything in place.
Students will then use specialized techniques to polish the pieces without damaging the delicate work. Natalie Aresta-Katz is passionate about Portuguese filigree. Natalie’s family is from the region where this type of jewelry is typically made, and she will share images of traditional pieces. Pre-twisted filigree wire and filigree solder are included in the cost of the class. Students are encouraged to bring a few feet of 23/24 gauge sterling silver round wire to practice the technique of twisting the wire themselves. Soldering skills required for this workshop.

Born into a Portuguese-American family, Natalie discovered a passion for filigree at a young age. In her art, Natalie combines traditional swirls and curls with modern design to create truly unique pieces. Natalie embraces age-old Portuguese crafting methods to discover new design possibilities and create pieces that are simple in shape, but visually and artistically complex. Natalie invites others to explore the intricate beauty of filigree and discover the timeless narratives that can be woven into each delicate strand.
