All painting and drawing media are welcome. Demonstrations will be in gouache. This list is offered for students new to painting, or those who seek guidance on what to purchase for gouache. I can advise individually for materials in your medium.
Colors (if you are using gouache: Artist grade tubes as Graham, Holbein, Winsor Newton You want to have a warm and cool version of each: red, yellow and blue. My suggestions: There are many variations, and brands are named differently, so you may substitute if you have similar colors.
- Titanium/ Permanent white
- Cadmium yellow light
- Quinacridone or permanent rose
- Cadmium red light
- Ultramarine Blue
- Pthalo blue, or cobalt turquoise
- Yellow ocher
- Burnt Umber
- Ivory black
- Pthalo Green
Optional Colors: Ivory Black, Cadmium yellow deep, Perylene violet, Terra Rosa.
Brushes: Short handle synthetic brushes are best for gouache. My favorties are Robert Simmons White sable Raphael Precision, Mimik Kolinsky also good. Flats or brights: 1”. ¾: ½” ¼”, Rounds: Small rounds #44 blick knife optional
Palette: Specific to your medium. I use a Mijello Fusion 24 folding plastic palette and small ceramic wells
Substrate: Quality watercolor paper for gouache - I like hot press (smooth) Arches. You can buy by large sheet and tear or buy a block. I often use 12 x 16, sometimes larger or smaller. The blocks are quite expensive, so you can save by buying a pad instead of block. Canvas for oil or acrylic.
