Unorthodox is one of the breakout series of the year.

This four-episode portrait of a young woman’s escape from her restrictive Satmar Hasidic community has emerged as a global phenomenon since debuting in March. Starring Israeli actors Shira Haas and Amit Rahav in stunning performances, Netflix’s Unorthodox effortlessly weaves between Yiddish, English, and German languages, and jumps between two very different worlds—Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Berlin, Germany—as it explores the limits and beauty of faith, the power of passion, and the meaning of freedom. Join Haas, Rahav, and showrunner Anna Winger in conversation with Entertainment Weekly’s David Canfield as they reflect on the show’s response around the world, revisit the making of key scenes, and address whether there’s more story to tell.

Anna is a British-American writer, producer, and creator of the television shows Unorthodox and Deutschland83, and founder of Studio Airlift, a production company in Berlin. Winger was raised in Kenya, Massachusetts, and Mexico. She studied at Columbia University in New York. She has received Emmy, Peabody, and Adolf Grimme awards for her work.

Shira Haas

Shira is an Israeli actress best known in her country for her role in the hit series Shtisel, now streaming on Netflix. She made her feature film debut in the emotionally complex drama Princess, which made an impact at the 2015 Sundance Film festival. Most notably, Shira acted alongside Jessica Chastain as ‘Urszula’ in Niki Caro’s 2017 film, The Zookeeper’s Wife. She also played the role of ‘Alma’ in the Oscar-nominated Israeli hit film, Foxtrot which garnered Shira one of her many Ophir Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Additional film credits include Broken Mirrors and Nobel Savage, as well as the Israeli television series, Harmon, and The Conductor. Most recently, Shira wrapped roles in the feature film, Eseau, alongside Harvey Keitel and is the star of the Netflix mini-series Unorthodox, which was released worldwide in March 2020.

Amit Rahav is on the path to stardom following his breakout performance as ‘Yanky’ in the 2020 Netflix limited series, Unorthodox. From Israel, Rahav served in the Israeli army for three years and performed as a part of the theatre troop prior to landing the role. In 2016, Rahav appeared in the Israeli show, Flashback as Aviv, a student who comes out as gay on the show. He made history as being the first gay character in any Israeli children’s show. Other previous credits include: USA’s Dig, The Damned, Wild Horses and “ishpaha Sholetet.
