Tom Brokaw On An Iraqi Student’s Post College Plans: “Join Jihad And Fight The United States”

News legend Tom Brokaw joined media personality Phil Donahue at 92Y on May 28, 2013. The two spoke about Brokaw’s Military Channel program The Brokaw Files and current events. In this clip, Donahue asks Brokaw about his reporting on the Iraq War, soliciting an interesting anecdote from Brokaw about what an Iraqi student’s post-college graduation plans:

I’m going to join jihad and fight the United States. You cannot come in and tell us what to do in this country.
Brokaw responded, “I’m the United States, I’m from America.” The student assured him:
No, no, it’s not about you…it’s about Bush. I don’t want Bush telling me what to do.
Brokaw concluded,

“We had Saddam in a box, we should have left him in that box.”
