The "Natural Inferiority" of Women

Nov 12, 1991

Author and businesswoman Tama Starr reads excerpts from her new book The Natural Inferiority of Women: Outrageous Pronouncements by Misguided Males (1991). At the time of this recording, Starr was the president of Artkraft Strauss, the company responsible for most of the illuminated signage on Broadway and in Times Square. The Natural Inferiority of Women is a collection of quotations from men about women which Starr started collecting around 1972 because she “found them outrageous.” Throughout the course of the program, Starr shares some of these quotations and their origins. She covers topics including the souls of women, comparing women to animals (with specific comparisons to horses), poetry, advice against matrimony, domestic abuse, and women in the workplace. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.

The Preservation of and Increased Access to the 92nd Street Y Humanities Audio Archives is generously funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom.
